light weight tubes

Why the S-Tubo-MTB is actually worth 280 €

In general, weight is an important issue for bicycles used as sports equipment. What are the advantages of saving weight? How can I make my bike lighter? And how much does it cost me?

Acceleration advantage: The weight of the full setup (rider + bike) of 80 kg can be reduced by 164 grams by replacing conventional butyl tubes with S-Tubo-Road. The following table shows that this weight saving on the wheels has a positive effect on the effort required for acceleration:

inner tube used

full setup weight

watts required for acceleration to

36 km/h

Butyl Road

(98 grams)

80,00 kg
412,00 watts

S-Tubo-Road

(23 grams)

79,85 kg

409,80 watts

Therefore, you can easily and quickly save 2,2 watts with using a S-Tubo-Road.

Conversely, this means of course that with the same amount of force, the bike that is lighter accelerates faster and at a higher speed. Here you can find a test video:

In theory and in practice, you can see that a lighter bike has significant advantages when it comes to acceleration. How can weight be saved in the first place?

Lightweight versions are available for most components: saddles, wheels and the like are available in different weight and price categories. It is obvious that lighter means more expensive. The following two diagrams show the price/weight ratio of saddles and wheels.

The cheapest wheelset in our diagram costs approximately 145 € but weighs a hefty 2280 grams. In contrast, the wheelset weighing only 1350 grams costs 1613 €.

For both, saddles and wheels, a weight saving of 1 gram costs an average of 1.60 €.

On the other hand, with Tubolitos you can reduce weight much more favorably. For example: S-Tubo-MTB weighs 45 grams for 29″ wheels, which is 175 grams less than a standard tube made of butyl. According to our diagram, S-Tubo-MTB should sell for just under 280.00 €. In fact, it costs 32.90 € and is therefore an extremely favorable weight tuning in comparison to saddles or wheels, since you only have to spend 0.30 € per gram saved.

With Tubolito you do not have to spend a fortune on weight tuning and still have a light bike for fast acceleration and especially for hill climbs.
